It all started by being a volunteer teacher

The first English class in my life to a bunch of 4th graders in a rural school in Beijing, China, turns out to become one of the most valuable lesson I learned in my life as well. The students stared at me with eagerness and curiosity as I introduced songs, poems, and games. Witnessing their excitement as they absorbed new knowledge brought me a sense of fulfillment that surpassed all the achievements I had gained over the past decade. Some of my students fell in love with English and insisted on writing to me in this new language and sent me photos of their writings via their parents’ phones. I will send back my suggestions and revision within a day or two.  Students are fascinated about the movies and songs I brought them to engage with in class, I will teach them how to appreciate cultural differences behind the screens, poets and songs in the language they can understand. They loved English lesson I introduced with new form of learning through multimodal pedagogy mixed with technologies. This is also when it dawned on me that students show a better absorption of knowledge through different formation of literacies like movie, games and songs; This is an early idea that curated in me that developed many years later in the form of a Gen AI powered interactive novel reading product aiming to prompt their passion for language and culture learning and thinking.

Incubating tech startup into different interdisciplinary practices in corporate

As I gained more experience in interdisciplinary tech practices over the three years while simultaneously being a teacher, I saw that technology could be a powerful tool for advancing educational equity, especially in places where resources were limited. With expertise gained from my years advancing technology innovation within a large conglomerate, I then transitioned to new professional opportunities, working in startups focused on addressing educational challenges through innovative tech solutions.

Interdisciplinary practices through AI, BCI projects intersection with education in Startups

From 2021 to the present, I have worked at edtech companies that use AI,generative AI, BCI(Brain-Computer interface)tech to build ed-tech application for all students. Some of the products are very popular.

For GenAI project, working with an algorithm engineers and educational experts, we produced an interactive reading experience for children narrated by an AI Avatar of Monkey King, who told stories from the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West. After extensive testing with different age groups, we realized that our Avatar was only appealing to 5-8 year olds. The development of AI products is in its infancy; we need to combine the benefits technology offers with continued study about how children learn. We also need to understand technology’s pitfalls as well as its promise.
